Periodontal treatments

Periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease, is an infection that has progressed and is causing damage to the soft tissue. At its earliest stages, periodontal disease is known as gingivitis. When left untreated, it can lead to loss of the bone that supports the teeth and eventually leads to tooth loss.

At Lakeview Dental, Dr. Newman can perform periodontal surgery to remove tartar build-up from deep within the gum pockets. If the disease has progressed to bone loss, we can complete bone and tissue grafts which helps regenerate lost jaw bone and tissue. This prevents more damage to the surrounding bone and helps preserve your natural teeth as much as possible.

OraVital Salivary DNA testing

OraVital’s Salivary Test is designed to detect the presence of a variety of oral pathogens from samples taken from your saliva, tongue, and gums. This allows us to achieve an accurate whole-mouth picture of your oral health, including the exact type and location of oral infection. OraVital’s Salivary Test helps us identify and diagnose bacteria that causes gum disease and cavities, inflammation, and the presence of yeast infections.

With this information, we can apply the right treatments based on your individual diagnosis. This leads to better control of gum disease, bad breath and cavities, and a lower risk of re-infection.

Bad breath (halitosis) treatments

There are many causes of bad breath, including poor oral hygiene, cavities, and underlying health conditions. At Lakeview Dental, we assess the health of your teeth and gums and may ask you some questions regarding your overall health. Our goal is to discover what is causing bad breath so that we can recommend the right treatment plan.

Treatment may include:

  • Deep gum cleaning which removes plaque and bacteria that has built up underneath the gum pockets
  • Tongue scraping as a large amount of bacteria can live on the surface of the tongue, causing bad breath
  • Dental filling to prevent the progression of tooth decay
  • Recommendations for a medicated toothpaste and mouthwash

Preventive services

Along with general dentistry services such as cleanings, check-ups, and oral exams, additional preventive care can help you achieve optimal oral health. We offer:

  • Dental sealants – A protective shield is applied on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, blocking out food and bacteria. Dental sealants can effectively protect against 80% of cavities for 2 years.
  • Fluoride treatments – Fluoride treatments are typically a part of our professional cleaning services and supports healthy tooth enamel. The high concentration of fluoride fights bacteria and is especially recommended for patients who are at high risk of developing cavities.

Oral cancer screening

We recommend having regular oral cancer screenings for adults over the age of 20. Our goal is to detect oral cancer early on so we can treat it before it progresses. During a routine dental visit, Dr. Newman will perform an examination of your mouth to identify signs of oral cancer. We use VELscope technology to examine oral mucosa and identify tissue abnormalities like pre-cancer, cancer, and other diseases in a quick and non-painful way. If there are signs present, she will recommend additional tests to properly diagnose oral cancer and start treatment.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, give us a call and we can recommend the right services. We look forward to serving you!
