LANAP in Calgary: Laser Gum Treatment

Dr. Newman is very excited to offer two new treatment options to you: LANAP for laser treatment of gum disease and LAPIP for the recovery of failing implants, both provided by the Periolase MVP-7 dental laser.

A healthy smile requires healthy gums

We understand the importance of a healthy smile for our Calgary patients. Healthy gums are the foundation of a strong, beautiful smile, yet many patients struggle with gum disease, a common condition that affects the gums and bone supporting your teeth.

Your gums play a vital role in keeping your teeth secure and preventing infection. They act like a protective seal around the base of your teeth. Healthy gums are typically pink and firm, and they don’t bleed easily when you brush or floss. However, gum disease can cause them to become red, swollen, and bleed.

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, you might be a good candidate for our new, minimally invasive laser treatment called LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure). LANAP treatment can effectively target and remove infected tissue in your gums while promoting regeneration of healthy tissue.

Similar to LANAP, for those with dental implants who are experiencing attachment loss, we offer LAPIP (Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Protocol) to treat peri-implantitis.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease starts with the buildup of plaque on the teeth: a sticky film containing bacteria that accumulates if not removed through regular brushing, flossing or hygiene dental services. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which can only be removed by a dental professional.

Plaque and tartar can irritate your gums, causing inflammation (gingivitis), swelling and bleeding. As your body fights the bacterial infection, pockets form between your teeth and gums, which worsen the infection. This can lead to damage of the supporting tissues, leading to periodontal gum disease (periodontitis) and attachment loss, which are advanced stages and a more serious problem, which could even lead to tooth loss.

Traditional Treatment Options

Prior to LANAP treatment being available, treatment of diseased gum tissues and failing dental implants has involved oral surgery. The first line of defence is always preventive, proper oral care, but then the following methods must be considered:

  • Scaling and root planing: This non-surgical procedure is the most common first line of defence for gum disease, to remove plaque and tartar (calculus) from above & below the gum line.
  • Flap surgery: This more invasive approach involves reflecting (lifting) the gum tissue to access the infected root surfaces and underlying bone. Dr. Newman can then remove anything harmful, clean the root surfaces, and may reshape bone as needed. Finally, your gums repositioned and sutured (stitched) back into place. This method can be uncomfortable and requires healing time.
    • Pocket reduction gum surgery: In a similar fashion, this gum surgery focuses on reducing the depth of gum pockets around the teeth. This can make it easier for you to clean your teeth and prevent future infection.

These traditional methods may be effective, but are more invasive, uncomfortable and have a longer healing time compared to LANAP in Calgary or LAPIP for implants. Additionally, they often involve removing some healthy tissue along with the diseased tissue.

Introducing LANAP treatment: a minimally invasive dental laser treatment

At Lakeview Dental Centre, we’re very excited to offer LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) as a safe alternative to traditional gum disease treatment. LANAP utilizes a special FDA-approved dental laser to precisely target and remove tissue that has become diseased and bacteria from around your teeth and gum line.

Calgary LANAP treatment is safe & advantageous

Calgary LANAP LAPIP laser
LANAP and LAPIP offer several advantages over traditional methods:

  • Minimally Invasive: Compared to scaling and root planing, patients notice that LANAP is a much gentler procedure. The laser minimizes discomfort and bleeding, making it a good option for you if you’re apprehensive about the traditional methods above.
  • Faster Treatment Times: Due to being less invasive, treatment with a dental laser can be offered in shorter and/or fewer appointments, and with shorter recovery time.
  • Faster Healing Times: Because the laser therapy promotes a more precise removal of infected tissue, it also encourages faster healing. This allows you to recover faster, with less discomfort, and no need for sutures.
  • Promotes Better Tissue Regeneration: One of the unique benefits of LANAP is its ability to stimulate the regeneration of new healthy tissue. This can help restore a more natural appearance to your smile and improve the long-term health of your smile.
  • Laser dentistry is safe and FDA-approved, and we always put our patient’s safety and comfort first.

Is LANAP treatment or LAPIP right for you?

If you’re experiencing any signs of periodontal disease, such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, or recession, then LANAP may be a suitable option for you and we’d welcome you to speak with Dr. Newman about this possibility.

If you’re experiencing similar issues around a dental implants then you may be at risk of an implant failure, making LAPIP treatment very relevant.

During a consultation at Lakeview Dental Centre, we can assess your individual needs.

A healthier smile starts with healthy gums

Maintaining healthy tissue is crucial for a beautiful smile and overall oral health. It’s far better to prevent gum disease in the first place, or reverse it in the minor gingivitis stage, but if you’re concerned about the topics discussed here then LANAP or LAPIP may be for you.
